The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis have been frantically busy trying to prevent Glasgow City Council from installing a new Eastern Entrance to the Necropolis. We firmly believe this will be detrimental in the long term to the heritage of the cemetery.
However, you may have seen information in the media very recently informing that this proposal is going ahead.
The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis were invited to attend a meeting on the 28th October 2025 with Glasgow City Council to discuss the location and design of the Eastern Entrance.
At this meeting the Friends of Glasgow Necropolis, once again presented our objections backed by factual rationale of the major issues within the Glasgow Necropolis, which will be exacerbated if this proposal goes ahead.
It is our understanding that despite our objections this proposal is going ahead.
We have submitted an Open Letter to the Glasgow City Council Project Manager, in response to the outcome of the meeting, ahead of a very brief consultation on the 6th & 7th November.
The Open Letter outlines our objections and can be viewed below Open Letter – Glasgow Necropolis Eastern Entrance
If you care about the Glasgow Necropolis, we urge you to read the Open Letter.
If you care about the Glasgow Necropolis, voice your support for our objections by email or letter to Glasgow City Council, your elected representatives or to Ian Elder, City Centre Strategy Team, who is in charge of the project. Ian.Elder@glasgow.gov.uk
There is a very short window of opportunity to do this, and we are asking for your support to prevent this very real threat to the future of the Glasgow Necropolis.
