Circumstances of death
Killed in flying accident when Short Stirling III serial number LK517 of 1654 Conversion Unit broke up in the air following loss of control by the pilot and crashed at West Thickley Farm between Shildon and Middridge, 2 miles west of Aycliffe. It was considered that the tail assembly had been put under excessive strain and this led to the eventual structural failure.
