| 1913 | On 20th September 1913 Charles sailed on SS Royal Edward from Bristol to Quebec, Canada, arriving on the 27th. It is not known when he returned to Scotland . |

| WAR SERVICE | Charles was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Clyde division of the RNVR on 8th April 1913 but at the outbreak of war was not required for a sea-going position. Instead he was posted to the Anson Battalion, 2nd Royal Naval Brigade of the Royal Naval Division on 25th August 1914. He took part in the Defence of Antwerp 4th – 10th October 1914 and in 1915 was sent to Gallipoli. [He was officially a member of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 28th Feb until his death in May]. The Division landed at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915, Charles leading the beach party from HMS Implacable [Fleet Surgeon Adrian A Forrester d. 25/4/15 also served on HMS Implacable]. He was killed in action on the 8th May during the Second Battle of Krithia. He is described as having fallen in the first advance up the Achi Baba Nullah. |

| MEMORIAL | HELLES MEMORIAL, Panel 8 to 15. On the 25th August 1919 a report was received via AGRM [what does that stand for?] by Chaplain H.C. Foster that Charles had been buried about 50 yards from the “Brown House” on the 8th May 1915. However as his name is recorded on the Helles Memorial it seems that the site of his grave was lost or, possibly, he is one of the many thousands of unidentified men lying in the Gallipoli cemeteries. |
