Annual Service of Commemoration of the Kilbirnie Street Fire – 25th August 1972

On Monday the 25th August 2025, the annual commemoration of the Kilbirnie Street Fire, its 53rd anniversary, took place at the Glasgow Necropolis, in remembrance of the seven firemen who gave their lives for the City of Glasgow on Friday 25th August 1972.

The Kilbirnie Street fire, a fire at a cash and carry warehouse was first thought to be a serious but routine industrial premises fire, quickly that assessment changed.

The city of Glasgow once again, 12 years after enduring the pain of the Cheapside Street Fire in 1960, became a city in mourning.

The monument to the seven firemen in the Glasgow Necropolis is one of the most poignant in the cemetery, it is cherished and it and those who are interred beneath it, are held in deep respect.

The youngest fireman to die was only 20 years old, the oldest was 47 years old. They were all loved, someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s husband, someone’s daddy.

The sacrifice and bravery of the seven firemen who perished that day, will never be forgotten, the firemen who died that day were:

Divisional Officer Andrew Quinn

Leading Fireman Alistair Crofts

Fireman Iain Bermingham

Fireman Allan Finlay

Fireman William Hooper

Fireman Duncan McMillan

Fireman James Rook
